NYC: Urban Paradise
for You & Your Pet
Many people might think that a city like New York is no place for a dog, especially in the summer. But, surprise, the fun things to do around the Big Apple with your four-legged friend make non-dog owners just a bit jealous.
With more than 29,000 acres of parkland, the city is an oasis for dogs; just remember to follow the rules: dogs can be off-leash in city parks before 9 am and after 9 pm, unless otherwise noted. Dozens of parks have designated dog runs, fenced in areas where you canine can romp with his own kind. Check out the links below for a park near you or be adventurous and visit several. You both might make some new friends.
Swimming in summer is also an option. One of the hottest spots for a canine cool down is Prospect Park Dog Beach, a man-made, concrete beach designed just for dogs. It’s in the park, just off 9th Street on the path from the Tennis House. It’s fenced in too.
Shopping is also a summertime option. Take your well-behaved pooch to Bloomingdale’s or the shops in Soho, Chelsea, the South Street Seaport or Greenwich Village. Most are dog friendly and many even have water and treats.
You can also get some culture and learn a bit about our city. Take Fido on a dog-friendly walking tour. The Zuckerman family offers 3-5 hour tours of New York City, pointing out interesting historical facts about a variety of neighborhoods. Call 914.633.7397 for rates and to arrange a tour.
Or try a sunset stroll along the West Side Highway. The new promenade is pooch perfect and even has a doggie pit stop or two along the way.
And be sure to schedule a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge at dusk with your dog. Now through October the walk is especially fun with the four man-made waterfalls gushing into the East River. Wind up at Dog Hill in Brooklyn Heights (just over the Promenade and the BQE).
